What the holiday calendar covers
Trading holidays for NSE, BSE and MCX for the current year, with the next upcoming closure counted down at the top. Indian exchanges do not all close together — the equity exchanges share a holiday list while MCX commodity derivatives often run an evening session on days the equity market is shut — so each date shows exactly which venues are closed and which stay open.
How to read it
- Next Holiday — the nearest upcoming closure with the date, occasion and a countdown of trading days until it.
- Closed / Open Exchanges — per-date venue status — the detail that matters when NSE is shut but MCX's evening session still trades.
- Description — the occasion being observed, as published in the exchange circulars.
- Weekends and special sessions — Saturdays and Sundays are closed by default and are not listed; special sessions the exchanges occasionally schedule (such as Muhurat trading) are announced separately by circular.
Frequently asked questions
For equities, almost always — the two exchanges publish matching holiday lists. The difference is MCX: commodity derivatives frequently trade an evening session on equity holidays, which is why this calendar shows per-exchange status instead of one closed/open flag.
The expiry moves to the previous trading day. If the usual weekly or monthly expiry date is a listed holiday, contracts expire one session earlier — worth checking before positioning in the expiry week.
Diwali (Laxmi Pujan) is listed as a holiday for the normal session, but the exchanges traditionally run a short special Muhurat session that evening. Its exact timing is announced by circular each year.
